Yellow Submarine, EMBS Conference NUIG 22/8/2013

The European Marine Biology Symposium took place in NUI Galway recently but what the delegates were really in Ireland for was to compete for the ‘Yellow Submarine’, a near 50 year old annual competition for supremacy that is altered each year to suit the host country.
Go Gaelic were enlisted to provide this year’s version which took on an Irish Mini Olympic Gaelic Games format in which the participants initially learned the basic skills of hurling and gaelic football before utilising those skills for the main ‘Yellow Submarine’ challenge.
Unfortunately as you can see from the photos, what started out as an ‘It’s a hurling knock-out’ complete with sponges and water quickly descended into a water fight so in the end, the destination of this year’s Yellow Submarine had to be decided by a good old game of pirate’s plunder to whittle down the competitors.
In truth, nobody could have expected such a close finish as there was only a matter of inches between three of the four finalists. However, perhaps with the slight edge of home advantage, Ireland’s extra determination got them over the line.
Thanks to all who took part in what was a very entertaining afternoon in NUIG and especially to Clif and Karl who proved to be natural Gaelic Footballers!
